Rainbow jersey retro shirt

The rainbow jersey has been awarded to the cycling world champion since 1927. Every world champion in cycling earns the right to wear the rainbow jersey for one year. This retro cycling jersey from Ciclismo Casual is an ode to all world champions and in particular Freddy Maertens.

Boule d’Or cycling team

The cigarette brand Boule d’Or sponsored the Belgian cycling team from 1979 to 1984. Great cyclist such as Roger De Vlaeminck, Fons Dewolf, Marc Sergeant and Freddy Maertens rode for this cycling team. At the time, tobacco advertising was prohibited in France. To be able to participate in the Tour de France a ruse was devised. They found a chocolate manufacturer with the same name and transferred the team to them. In this way 8 stage victories and the green jersey of Freddy Maertens could be won.

Freddy Maertens

The most striking name within the Boule d’Or team was that of Freddy Maertens. Maertens’ career seemed to fizzle out in the late 1970s, but he got a new chance in the Boule d’Or team. In 1981 he amazed friend and foe with 5 victories in the Tour. Later that year he even won the Rainbow jersey after beating Hinault in the sprint at the World Championship in Prague.
